JULIAN STURDY'S FORESIGHT

The MP for York Outer, Mr Julian Sturdy, is a keen Brexiteer. He is also equipped with incredible foresight being able to see further into the future than anyone I know. On his website on June 22nd 2016 he advised constituents that he was going to vote to leave the EU (HERE) and by implication, urged them to follow his lead. He said, "The question you must ask yourself is whether you think Britain will be stronger inside or out of the European Union in ten, twenty and even fifty years’ time".

So, that's what we did. We asked ourselves if Britain would be stronger inside or out of the EU in 2066 and guess what? Nobody had the foggiest idea. But what we did notice was the date. It would be exactly one thousand years since William of Normandy sailed across The Channel and invaded this island. So, the question we then asked ourselves was - is the date a portent? And do you know what?  Nobody knew that either.

Eventually, we got round to asking the question we should have posed right at the start, It's this one. Is Julian Sturdy a total idiot?  And we all got that one immediately. He obviously takes what I call the long view and presumably thinks it will take that long for us to recover from Brexit. I won't be here in fifty years time so it doesn't really bother me that much but I am concerned for my children. Unfortunately, we all thought we would be better off inside the EU, not just in 10 or 50 years time, but also in two years time and so we voted to remain. In fact the vast majority of economists says we would be permanently worse off outside the market and the longer it goes the poorer we will be.

But that old soothsayer and clairvoyant Mr Sturdy knows better. After you with the tea leaves, Julian. What a fool!
