THE IRISH BORDER

There is a piece on Conservative Home, written by Ray Basset, a former Irish Ambassador to Canada, suggesting that Ireland needs to be careful not to push Britain too far and that there are solutions to the border conundrum (HERE).  He refers to Kurt Larsson's report for the EU parliament as a possible starting point.

Needless to say this has been lapped up by readers of the website and used to cast the blame for the sticking point onto the EU and Ireland, particularly the Irish premier Leo Varadkar.

This comes just a few days after the Northern Ireland Select Committee (HERE) said they were "unable to identify any border solution currently in operation across the globe that would enable physical infrastructure to be avoided when rules and tariffs diverge".

Mr Basset does the UK, himself and his country no favours by keeping people's hopes up that a magic solution can be found and implemented by December 2020, if at all. It cannot.  The sooner we realise and accept this the better.
