The Trump cult

Trump is a walking mass of personality disorders. He cannot admit ever to having made a mistake, always a sign of a weak man in my experience. On Ukraine, it's impossible for Trump to admit that Putin has played him like a fish for years. The much-touted meeting in Hungary between him and Putin has been cancelled following Putin's flat refusal even to discuss a ceasefire along the current line of contact. Zelensky has been patiently explaining to the orange idiot that only military might will force Russia to quit fighting, while Trump has been refusing to increase military aid, the exact opposite of a solution and guaranteed to extend the war.

Will Putin's stubborn refusal to back down cause Trump to rethink?  No. He is too stupid to see what an incredibly strong hand the West has right now, because he would need to admit that Europeans have been right all along, and he's been duped. Trump likes to see himself as the duper-in-chief.

Another sign of how his decision-making from a position of total ignorance is playing out into a disaster is in the agricultural sector. Trump is destroying many American soybean farmers who are struggling to survive after his trade war resulted in China, the industry's biggest export customer by far, stopped buying US soybeans and turned to Argentina to supply billions of dollars of the product. This is just one of the numerous negative impacts of his ludicrous policy of slapping massive tariffs on imports, especially products from China.

Beijing responded by raising its own tariffs and sourcing alternative products wherever they could. Argentina, under the government of the wannabe-Trump and utter screwball Javier Gerardo Milei,  has benefited hugely.

Trump has now been forced to promise help for these farmers to avoid bankruptcy by handing out compensation using money raised from other tariffs (aka import taxes) applied to other US imports. The precise details of an aid package are still being worked out. The farmers aren’t happy about accepting handouts and I don’t suppose the importers are happy about paying the tariffs either. It is a crazy pointless money-go-round achieving nothing.

Meanwhile, a case involving small businesses suing the government over the tariffs has reached the US Supreme Court. They allege the $3 trillion that Trump plans to raise through tariffs is a “massive illegal tax” on American companies.

It’s not obvious what this particular Supreme Court will decide. What he’s done is certainly unlawful because trade policy isn’t in the president’s purview, but since the court has an inbuilt pro-Trump majority, they may decide it’s OK. But they may not, in which case Trump has a big problem.

Yet despite the windfall in new soybean exports, the Argentine economy is a total basket case after Milei slashed the government payroll by thousands and cut spending by about a third. This is what Trump is trying to do in the US. The peso went into free fall, so Trump and his economic chief Scott Bessent have put together a $20 billion support package, which could soon double to $40 billion. Unsurprisingly, American farmers aren’t happy that Trump has decimated their market and is now propping up their main competitor. Can you blame them?

As if that’s not enough, he’s now talking about buying more beef from Argentina! Trump told reporters on Sunday aboard Air Force One that it would help to push down US beef prices by increasing the overall supply.

"We would buy some beef from Argentina, If we do that, that will bring our beef prices down."

So now beef farmers aren’t happy with him because, although beef prices have hit record highs this year, they aren’t making any money. The cost of production has also increased. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association issued a statement with CEO Colin Woodal saying:

"This plan only creates chaos at a critical time of the year for American cattle producers, while doing nothing to lower grocery store prices.”

The NCBA called on President Trump and members of Congress to "let the market work, rather than intervening in ways that do nothing but harm rural America."

However, some beef farmers continue to support Trump despite the damage he's inflicting on them. Take a look at this tweet from a cattle rancher in Wyoming:

Yes, in the face of him damaging their business, they still support him!!!  They're in a cult.

This isn't just in farming either, it's happening right across the US. He's dismantling everything that made America great, but 30-40% of American voters continue to worship him even as he lays waste to their livelihoods and civil rights.

Another small example of this cult-like ethos surrounding the narcissist is in golf. Trump is an avid golfer (he is said to spend 30% of his time as president on the golf course). It’s well known that Trump is a mega-cheat at the game. He cheats in every way, at every hole, in every tournament and against everyone he plays against. He always wins ….. by cheating.

Golf is a sport where self-reporting is the norm, and therefore, integrity and honesty are highly valued. But I learned recently that the golfing legend Jack Nicklaus is a Trump supporter and publicly endorsed him in 2020, which I find absolutely stunning. They have played together several times, and I assume Trump cheated, because he can't help himself.

But Nicklaus apparently doesn't care. That’s how much of a cult Trumpism is.
