ANDREW PERCY

Andrew Percy is the MP for Goole. He is seriously Eurosceptic and makes Bill Cash look like a moderate. He was apparently a history teacher and local councillor according to his website although he has described himself as "not the brightest person on the planet" (Here Column 252). In other words he thinks of himself as a bit of a dimwit and reading his parliamentary interventions the reason is obvious. He sounds like one of those blokes you meet in the pub, a loudmouth who sees simple solutions to every issue through the bottom of a pint glass.

He was elected in 2010 along with Nigel Adams and Julian Sturdy. I imagine the three of them know each other well.  But note their relative records. Nigel Adams, never out of the pages of the Selby Times, has so far made 394 interventions in debates in the House or Westminster Hall. Julian Sturdy has made 454 interventions but compared to Percy they are mere amateurs. He has made 1237 interventions, more than three times as many as Adams!

He admits to being not the brightest person but cannot seem to stop himself giving his opinion on every topic under the sun!

Unlike Adams and Sturdy he made no great declarations on his website about the EU referendum, either before or after the vote. I am sure he made plenty of others in the local Goole Times although he probably didn't need to since everybody must have known his violently anti-EU views.  But this didn't harm his career - he is now an Under Secretary of State at the DCLG (HERE). It goes to show being dim witted and foam-at-the-mouth anti-EU can take you a long way in today's Conservative party.
