THE CITY

The position of the Brexiteers was neatly encapsulated in The Sunday Times editorial last Sunday. The City of London will not apparently "escape" the damage caused by Jeremy Corbyn's plan to raise the top rate of income tax to 45%. According to them bankers will be tempted to relocate elsewhere at the thought of paying a bit more tax. I do not deny this might apply to some. But when remainers suggested London's position as Europe's premier financial centre might be threatened by Brexit The Sunday Times ignored it as scaremongering and urged everybody to vote leave.

Isn't it really odd how a small increase in tax that as far as I can see no one in The City has spoken out against will be so damaging, while Brexit, which just about every financial organisation in London warned would mean job losses and a diminishing of London's role on providing financial services across Europe, doesn't pose any risk at all? At least according to The Sunday Times that is.

To be a Brexiteer you have to believe three totally contradictory things before breakfast.
