EVERYBODY HAS AN IDEA EXCEPT MRS MAY

Adam Marshall, the DG of the British Chambers of Commerce, a role formerly held by the utterly odious John Longworth, is appealing to the government (HERE) to avoid a harsh immigration policy among signs that industry is finding difficulty in recruiting people.

He says unless the government acts "now" it is going to see, "unfinished urban buildings, fruit rotting on Herefordshire trees, care homes and hotels shutting their doors from Bournemouth to Inverness, or manufacturers investing in their overseas operations instead of here at home."

Three quarters of BCC members are apparently facing recruitment issues, a figure at or close to the highest since BCC records began 25 years ago

One can get an idea of the paralysis at the heart of government when we also learn the UK is to push the plan favoured by The City for a system of mutual recognition to enable our financial services sector to retain access to European markets (HERE). The EU have apparently already rejected it. But note it is not the government's plan because they don't actually have one. This follows the IOD (Institute of Directors) suggestion that we should adopt something along the lines of Turkey's deal with the EU (HERE).

The CBI wants to remain in the customs union. The BCC is worried about problems recruiting EU workers after Brexit. The void where policy should be is being filled by industry and commerce while the government acts like a rabbit in the headlights. Pathetic.
