ANGELA MERKEL

A week ago The New European Newspaper carried an article lamenting the paucity of political heavyweight thinkers and intellectuals, something I have long believed. We used to have politicians like Jim Callaghan, Edward Heath, Margaret Thatcher, John Smith, Jo Grimmond and so on. Whether you agreed with them or not you recognised the gravitas and the quality of their thinking. Now we have only pygmies and minnows squabbling like children over great matters of state. The Germans have Angela Merkel.

Mrs Merkel is covered by this article in The Guardian (HERE) and as Time magazine's person of the year in 2015 (HERE). She is in the news at the moment because she suggested that Europe can no longer rely "to some extent" on the USA or the UK and that Europe must now "fight for our own future and destiny" (HERE). and (HERE). I think she is right. We have shown ourselves to be capricious and self serving, something that I never thought possible.

Having visited Germany and worked with Germans I am an admirer of their careful, logical thinking and capacity for hard and efficient work. If I could choose between being led by Trump/May or Merkel it would be Mrs Merkel every time.
