EURATOM

The UK government has published a Technical note on Nuclear Safety, specifically about contracts for the supply of nuclear material (HERE). The note's conclusion is that "clarity is needed" about contracts under the Euratom treaty which extend beyond the date we leave the EU. Note there is no actual proposal or suggestion of any kind. I think the problem for us is that Euratom is overseen by the ECJ and this is a red line issue.

After we leave, we become a third country and (I assume) the treaty sets out how these third country contracts are handled. However, we obviously want to be treated as an EU member for the purpose of existing and ongoing contracts - but without coming under the ECJ. It looks like another have cake and eat it problem that we want the EU to resolve.

A contributor to Conservative Home website hit the nail on the head recently when he said it is up to us to suggest solutions. The EU is not leaving us, we are leaving the EU. They are perfectly happy with the status quo and there is no obligation on them to offer innovative or imaginative solutions to problems of our making. If we have no solution then the answer is - there is no solution, except remaining in the EU.
