NEW CUSTOMS REGIME More fantasy from Davis

David Davis and other lunatic Brexiteers seem terribly relaxed about exiting the EU in March 2019 and trading under WTO rules. This would massively increase the number of items to be declared at customs coming into the UK from Europe at Dover from about 60 million to about 300 million (HERE). Now the Chairman of Maritime UK, David Dingle, (HERE) who represents marine and shipping industries is 'very nervous' about how long it will take to develop a new system to cope.

He says the latest customs declaration system is due to go live in October this year but took eight to ten years to develop. Mr Dingle, who is also chairman of Carnival UK, which operates cruises for P&O, said: “Having looked at the time it takes, even in my own company, to build complex new systems, I would be sceptical we will be where we need to be in two years.” Between him and Davis who would you trust?

Davis has ruled out any off the shelf solution like the EEA (HERE) saying it would be the "worst of all worlds" - so much for flexibility - and seems to think he can negotiate a bespoke customs solution with the EU and implement it - in two years!  We have now left fantasy land and travelled well beyond to a world where reality has lost all meaning and everyone you speak to is completely spaced out on mind altering drugs - otherwise known as DEXEU.

This blog post by Richard North (HERE) sets out more details on the subject.

Update: The Institute for Government have produced a report about implementing a new customs regime (HERE) and it looks phenomenally complicated and fraught with problems.
