POLLING

YouGov have been running polls asking if people think the decision to leave the EU was right or wrong since August 2016. These have moved decisively towards WRONG since the middle of last year. A week or so ago saw the biggest lead at 7% since the polls began. But YouGov have also run polls asking another question: If there was a referendum tomorrow how would you vote? These are also moving against Brexit and the latest poll shows 53% to 47% for REMAIN (HERE).

There has been a total of 71 polls, starting in February 2012, and they tell us a lot about the sheer recklessness of calling a referendum. The first one showed 62% wanted to LEAVE and for the first couple of years there was a consistent majority for leaving the EU. But as time went on the numbers became more balanced and since the referendum itself YouGov have carried out 20 polls. The one immediately after the vote in July 2016 showed a tie at 50% for each side. In the months following the figures showed a narrow lead for Leave.

But since March 2017 there has been a gradual switch to a narrow lead for Remain. And the last survey on June 11th showed the largest lead for Remain since the referendum itself.

One might hazard a guess that as Brexit staggers on and the economy is brought to its knees we will see a cross over continuing until there is a 62% majority for Remain. Let us hope so.
