Unite the Kingdom march

We are living in extraordinary times. Yesterday, a known fascist, Tommy Robinson, AKA Stephen Yaxley Lennon, who has served five prison terms and was once a member of the BNP, led a protest march of over 100,000 people through the streets of London. Few protests have been as badly named as the Unite the Kingdom march. It seems the specific aim was to divide the nation. The size of the crowd, racist through and through, means it can’t be dismissed as a damp squib. A counter protest, Stand up to Racism, gathered just 5,000.  Robinson is today’s Oswald Moseley, perhaps the most right wing political activist we’ve got, and he managed to organise a huge protest in the heart of the capital. We seem to have learned nothing since the Battle of Cable Street in 1936.

As if that wasn’t disheartening enough, among those addressing the crowd in Parliament Square was one of the world’s richest men. Elon Musk spoke by video link and railed against the “woke mind virus” and told the crowd that “violence is coming” and that “you either fight back or you die,” echoing Donald Trump on 6 January 2021.

It's not clear if this came before or after 26 police officers were injured and 25 people arrested for various offences. The Metropolitan Police later described the level of violence as "wholly unacceptable.

Musk said: “I really think that there’s got to be a change of government in Britain. You can’t – we don’t have another four years, or whenever the next election is, it’s too long. Something’s got to be done. There’s got to be a dissolution of parliament and a new vote held.”

Who he meant by 'we' isn't clear.  He has joint American and Canadian citizenship. Who we choose to be governed by is nothing to do with him.

Musk also claimed outrageously that “the left are the party of murder”, referring to the death of Charlie Kirk. He said: “There’s so much violence on the left, with our friend Charlie Kirk getting murdered in cold blood this week, and people on the left celebrating it openly. The left is the party of murder and celebrating murder. I mean, let that sink in for a minute, that’s who we’re dealing with here.”

It seems he's wrong on that point. Kirk's alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, came from the right. His parents are registered Republicans in Utah and also members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormons. Tyler Robinson's grandmother told the Daily Mail that the family are, "staunch Trump supporters" and that her son, Tyler's father, is a "Republican for Trump".

Tyler's politics are said to have changed in recent years, but we don't know in which direction yet. There have been suggestions that he supported Nick Fuentes, an even more extreme right-winger and head of a movement known as the Groypers.  However, this may turn out to be fake news.

In any case, Musk's shocking outburst came just a few hours after a host on Fox News, perhaps the most right-wing channel on American TV, called for homeless people to be executed. Brian Kilmeade said they should be given "an involuntary lethal injection, or something. Just kill them.

In case you think I’m making it up, this is the moment:

Brian Kilmeade endorses euthanizing homeless people: "Involuntary lethal injection, or something. Just kill them."

Wealthy men the world over are funding the rise of authoritarian governments everywhere, and if they are allowed to succeed, I think the future looks very bleak indeed.

Elon Musk also seems to have learned nothing, either. Sales of his Tesla brand cars in Europe have slumped in recent times, with buyers absolutely appalled by his extreme political views. Yesterday is not going to help. The 100,000 marchers are not, I daresay, his natural customer base.

He is alienating more and more potential buyers.

Charlie Kirk

Charlie Kirk’s widow has vowed to carry on his work. She gave a press conference standing behind a lectern carrying the message: May Charlie be received into the merciful arms of Jesus, our loving saviour.

Erika Kirk said, “The cries of this widow will echo around the world like a battle cry.”

I am not religious at all, but I really struggle to believe Jesus would have approved of Charlie Kirk or anything that he was campaigning for.

I leave you with a couple of articles on Kirk. First, this from The Nation: Charlie Kirk’s Legacy Deserves No Mourning, sub-titled The white Christian nationalist provocateur wasn’t a promoter of civil discourse. He preached hate, bigotry, and division.

And this alternative view by the editors of The Free Press: Je Suis Charlie, sub-titled, Charlie Kirk was murdered while practicing the very act that gave birth to this nation—and the only thing that will ensure its survival.

Finally, remember the story of the Haitian community in Ohio, who were said to be eating cats and dogs?  Newsweek had an article last September revealing how Charlie Kirk and his team at Turning Point USA tricked an elderly couple into helping them make a video supporting the claim. This was after City authorities had already made it clear the stories were just not true.

The editors at The Free Press say, "We believe that most Americans want to return to an America where honest debates and open conversations are the norm."

Even if that's true (which I doubt) Charlie Kirk was never the man to do it.
