Donald Trump has posted a lot of crazy stuff on his own Truth Social platform and Twitter in the last few years, but yesterday I genuinely think marked the day he totally lost his mind. On Saturday, the 'No Kings' protests took place right across the USA. Organisers claimed 2,400 protests in total, covering every major city, every state and over eight million people, reportedly the largest in history. Nobody has ever seen anything like it, to use one of Trump's own stock phrases. And it seems they all went off peacefully without any violence. But Trump was obviously enraged by it all.
I suppose for a demented, thin-skinned narcissist like him, it was too much. He really believes everybody loves him, respects him and supports him. He never stops talking about his ‘ratings’ or the fantasy size of the crowds at his campaign rallies. It must have been a jolting experience that confronted him with just how incredibly unpopular he is in the country.
The TV coverage that he always relies on obviously sent him over the edge. He took to Truth Social with an AI-generated video depicting himself wearing a crown and flying in a jet fighter with ‘King Trump’ painted on the side. If that wasn’t bad enough, the plane appears to dump a mass of loose s**t all over a crowd of protesters. Here it is, if you can bear to watch:
I honestly don’t believe that even the unhinged Colonel Gaddafi or Idi Amin in their craziest moments would have ever thought of doing anything like it. It is the sort of thing a 13-year-old boy might do if he were sending a video to a friend for a laugh, a bit of toilet humour. But to see it done by the leader of the free world is absolutely beyond belief, and slightly terrifying.
Stunning though that was, perhaps even more telling is the fact that, as far as I can see, the video has barely been mentioned on any news broadcast or any political shows, in this country or in America:
The Sunday news shows don’t even mention it, and media reports won’t describe it accurately, but Trump posted a video literally showing him wearing a crown and dumping shit all over the US. It’s the most perfect and infuriating example of sane-washing yet.

That’s how totally insane things have become.
You simply cannot imagine any other leader in history doing that, but virtually everything and anything from Trump has now lost the capacity to shock. S******g on the very people you swore to serve nine short months ago, even graphically, is a new peak even for Trump.
But don’t expect Vance or anyone in his cabinet to call for the man with the nuclear codes to step down on mental health grounds. They are all terrified of what his MAGA supporters are capable of. The video is still up on his Truth Social account; nobody in his entourage has the guts to tell him it’s in terrible taste and bound to drive his ratings, already at a record low, down even further.
Also, it’s not as if Trump wasn’t on TV yesterday morning. Here he is on a Fox News show hosted by Maria Bartiromo, appearing to endorse the idea that Putin can keep the territory he’s occupying now.
She doesn't deign to ask him about the video and talks to him as if he's as sane as the next person.

I think even this underestimates Putin’s demands. The FT reports that in his meeting with Zelensky:
“The US president tossed aside maps of the frontline in Ukraine, insisted Zelenskyy surrender the entire Donbas region to Putin, and repeatedly echoed talking points the Russian leader had made in their call a day earlier." Trump is Putin's mouthpiece, the archetypal useful idiot, literally.
Their talks at times turned into a shouting match. Trump is said to have told Zelensky that Russia was winning the war and would destroy Ukraine if Kyiv didn't make a deal, a European official briefed on the meeting has told the FT.
"If (Putin) wants it, he will destroy you," Trump reportedly said to Zelensky.
Trump said Putin told him that the invasion of Ukraine was a "special operation, not even a war." Trump also said the Russian economy is "doing great."
According to the official, Trump also grew frustrated with Ukraine's battlefield map and tossed it aside, saying he was "sick" of seeing these maps. "This red line, I don't even know where this is. I've never been there," Trump is alleged to have said.
The war (because that is what it is) has been a disaster for Russia, but Putin is still trying to threaten the West. He’s like Chemical Ali.
Trump appears to have taken Putin seriously, although it’s hard to do that given the staggering losses sustained by the Russians over the last three and a half years in taking a tiny fraction of Ukraine and not even facing the full or even the partial force of NATO. Putin has been trying since February 2022 to ‘destroy’ Ukraine, and with all the forces at his disposal, he’s not been able to achieve a real breakthrough.

Russia has spent billions, the military has been decimated, the entire government is an international pariah, they have lost access to most of the European energy market for their gas and oil and face swinging sanctions. The economy is on the verge of a breakdown, and Putin is trying a last, desperate throw of the dice - and it may even succeed. Trump is that stupid.
The President of the USA is so terrified of Putin, for whatever reason, that he can’t recognise a bluff when it’s delivered on a plate. I don't know what Putin has on Trump, but I'm convinced it's something very serious. Putin is playing him, and Trump is so out of his mind that he can't see it.
What's absolutely clear is that Europe is on its own. If the final outcome is a massive strengthening of independent European military capabilities, it will be bad news for the USA.
We can never trust America again, even after Trump is gone.
