EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION

The leaked immigration document is causing some comments. Some people are suggesting it may be a way for our government to force British industry to properly train workers instead of employing foreign EU ones. One has to laugh at this idea. The government is responsible for education and this is and has been at the heart of our problems for at least half a century.

Having worked with and for many European companies it is stunningly obvious their education systems are better than ours. It is far from unusual to find engineers at all levels, from designers and managers down to technicians and service engineers who are highly qualified, multi lingual, multi disciplinary, logical, dedicated and hard working. This is all quite normal.

What this means, in the packaging industry that I know something of at least, is more advanced machines, better designed and supported with excellent feedback to improve future developments. I suspect it applies to other industries as well.

Industry cannot be held solely or even largely responsible for training. They can only work with the raw materials the state provides them with and if the UK government cannot ensure a better educated workforce of the right quality and quantity, industry will have to look elsewhere.
