LORD BRIDGES

Lord Bridges of Headley worked at David Davis' DEXEU department until June this year when he suddenly resigned (HERE) without any real reason given beyond he wanted to "move on". Now he (HERE) describes leaving the EU as a "gargantuan task", a description that seems to me to understate the scale of the difficulties by a considerable margin.

Remember, this is a person who has worked inside DEXEU and presumably was party to many meetings with officials and CEOs of big companies, people who really understand what Brexit actually means.

"The challenge of creating a new partnership with Brussels must involve the whole of Government, despite Mrs May's desire to pursue a domestic policy agenda", Lord Bridges said, adding, "I hear talk of the Government not wishing to be defined by Brexit. But Brexit is the biggest change this nation has faced since 1945".

The scale of the problem is perhaps slowly becoming clear and in spite of recruiting many more civil servants, it seems to me that the amount of effort involved in negotiating the quicksand of Brexit is going to suck the life out of the government's domestic policy agenda. All of the things that leave voters want will never be delivered before 2022, if at all. A lack of time, vision, money and expertise will be a drag on the economy and therefore on the government's ability to deliver any meaningful improvement for years and years. There will be change, but only for the worse.
