PHASE II GUIDELINES PUBLISHED BY THE EU27

The final phase II negotiating guidelines have been agree by the EU27 and published on Commission website (HERE). No doubt Rees-Moog will be foaming at the mouth and will be throwing accusations around that the UK will become a vassal state after March 2019. The guidelines repeat the deadline of December 2020 as the last date, which some people don't believe will be anywhere near enough time.

What it does do is pile more pressure on the government.  If it accepts the December 2020 deadline, planning must begin immediately for additional customs infrastructure and staff and we will need to replicate every EU agency or negotiate our way in to the ones we think will be in our interests. If we are not ready in time there will be even more chaos, especially at the border, than there will be whatever the result of the negotiations.

But if Davis tries to negotiate a more flexible date with an extension if necessary (as many experts think will be needed) the Brexiteers will go absolutely mad.

On the plus side for remainers, everything will remain the same for the next three years, except we wont't be involved in any of the institutions that make decisions although we will have to live with the consequences.

The Telegraph, fighting a desperate rearguard action, claims to have an "exclusive" that Mrs May will reject the guidelines (HERE). She will - until she accepts them.
